Vani Doraisamy and Meera Srinivasan CHENNAI: The results of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination which were declared on Wednesday have left several Tamil Nadu students smiling as they feel their efforts have been well rewarded. Out of the 5,25,000 students nationwide who had taken the examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education on April 30, a total of 24,487 were from Tamil Nadu. Among these, 15,970 from Chennai had taken the B.E/B.Tech entrance examination and 2,852 the B.Arch examination. Last year, 11,143 students took the examination. Though the all-India rank list was not immediately available, many Tamil Nadu students have scored considerably better in the national rankings as compared to last year. However, many of them prefer to wait for the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination results before deciding on future course of studies. R. Vignesh of DAV School, Mogappair, who had trained for the AIEEE with AIMS Education and secured the eighth rank in the State (rank number 634 at national level) is a little disappointed that the result did not match his performance. He had found the examination comparatively easy and prefers to wait for the results of the IIT JEE to decide on what course to join. So does Kaushik Anand of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, K.K. Nagar, who stands 15th in the State and 908 in the national rankings. Suman Pravagiri of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School had found the examination quite `challenging'. "Though my schoolteachers had given me additional training, time was always at a premium in entrance examinations," says the school topper who secured the 126th rank in the State. V. Bharathram, who emerged State topper in the Higher Secondary Examination, secured the 84th rank in the State in the AIEEE: "Since I was attending coaching classes for IIT-JEE, I did not find AIEEE too difficult. Attempting 150 questions in 180 minutes was the real challenge." Both Suman and Bharathram said they were happy with their ranks. "If one were to go by the State ranks obtained by students of Tamil Nadu, in relation to the national ranks they have secured, an improvement in performance may be seen," says S. Balasubramanian, director of T.I.M.E, Chennai, which trains students for competitive examinations. "Last year, a student who secured the 19th rank in the State was ranked 1045 at national level. This year, a student who has got the 13th State rank, is ranked 797. Similarly, last year, the 393rd State rank corresponded to the 40,000th national rank but this year, the student who got the 387th rank has been ranked 23,632 nationally," he explains. This reduction in the multiplier, he says, is a clear indication that the average Tamil Nadu student has become more competitive.
