NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday renewed his appeal to medical students and resident doctors to call off their strike against the proposed reservation for Other Backward Classes in institutions of higher learning. The Government, he said, would protect the legitimate interests of all sections and work towards "a fair, just and inclusive'' system of education in which no deserving student would be denied an opportunity. Dr. Singh said the Government was working towards an amicable settlement and asked all concerned to have faith in the Government's sincerity to take a fair view on the matter. "I have received the report of the Group of Ministers constituted to look into this matter in all its dimensions and come out with a comprehensive road map for the resolution of all issues. I will examine the report and the Government will take a view on the matter keeping in view the interests of all sections of society.'' The Prime Minister's fresh appeal came at a function got up to mark the completion of two years in office of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. Leaders of the constituents of the UPA and their Members of Parliament attended it.
Hosts dinner
Dr. Singh later hosted a dinner. Left leaders, including Prakash Karat, A.B. Bardhan, Brinda Karat and D. Raja were present. The 30-minute function at 7, Race Course Road saw both Dr. Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi release a report on the work done by the Government in the last two years. Ms. Gandhi praised the leadership Dr. Singh was providing to the coalition, and pledged to fulfil all promises made under the common minimum programme (CMP).
