KABUL: At least 16 civilians and 60 Taliban militants were killed in the U.S.-led Coalition's air strike over night in the restive province of Kandahar, provincial Governor Asadullah Khalid said on Monday. ``According to the report I got so far, at least 60 Taliban militants and 16 local persons were killed in the air strike last night,'' the Governor told Xinhua as he was paying visit to a hospital in Kandahar city. Taliban militants have used civilians' houses as their hideout, added Mr. Khalid. Fifteen civilians were wounded in the air strike, he added. Earlier in the day, the U.S.-led coalition forces issued a news release saying more than 50 Taliban militants were killed in Kandahar. ``Coalition forces conducted another successful operation in the Kandahar region near the village of Azizi that resulted in the unconfirmed deaths of more than 50 Taliban members,'' said the coalition. ``This was the second such operation in this area within a week and the purpose of this operation was to detain individuals suspected of terrorist and anti-Afghanistan activities,'' it added.
