Germany, Chile post wins

Duesseldorf: Germany began the defence of its World Team Cup title with a 2-1 win over Italy, while former champion Chile also made a winning start by beating Spain.

Nicolas Kiefer gave Germany the lead with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 victory over Filippo Volandri before Davide Sanguinetti levelled the tie by coming from two breaks down in the final set to beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

German pair Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske secured the tie for the host by overcoming Sanguinetti and Volandri 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles.

The results: At Duesseldorf: World Team Cup: Germany bt Italy 2-1 (Nicolas Kiefer bt Filippo Volandri 7-6, 6-3; Philipp Kohlschreiber lost to Davide Sanguinetti 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; Michael Kohlmann & Alexander Waske bt Sanguinetti & Volandri 6-4, 6-4).

Chile bt Spain 2-0 (Nicolas Massu bt Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; Fernando Gonzalez bt David Ferrer 7-5, 6-7, 6-3).
