IOB retains title

PERIAKULAM: Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, as expected retained the P.D. Chidambara Sourya Narayanan Memorial Trophy with a 73-57 victory over Vijaya Bank, Bangalore, for its third win in the last match of the semifinal round robin league of the 47th all-India basketball tournament organised by Silver Jubilee Sports Club here on Sunday night.

IOB, with an all-win record in the league emerged champion and collected Rs. 15,000 besides the Trophy. Indian Army, Bangalore, which huffed and puffed before registering a narrow 60-58 victory over Kerala State Electricity Board, Thiruvananthapuram, for its second win finished runner-up and bagged a cash award of Rs. 10,000.

Robinson (34 points) was simply unstoppable and the other IOB men, Mihir Pandey, Sugavaneswaran, Chandrasekar and ball handler Navaneethan played their part well. Vijaya Bank could not strike rhythm. However, the experienced Srinivasa Gowda, strived diligently to keep the opposition at least in check and collected 27 points. Former Olympian N. Amarnath gave away the prizes. Mr. Chidambara Suriyavelu, secretary, Silver Jubilee Sports Club, welcomed the gathering.

Special awards: Player of the tournament: (Jegannathan Memorial gold coin): Mihir Pandey (IOB). Best disciplined team: Indian Army; Promising Youngster: Rony (Vijaya Bank); League team best players: Sugavaneswaran (IOB), Jairam Jat (Indian Army); Srinivasa Gowda (Vijaya Bank); Manoj (KSEB).

The results: IOB, Chennai 73 (Robinson 34, Chandrasekar 12, Sugavaneswaran 11) bt Vijaya Bank, Bangalore 57 (Srinivasa Gowda 27, Roshan 14); Indian Army, New Delhi 60 (Jairam Jat 17, Sirajudeen 15, Arockia Babu 10) bt KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram 58 (Manoj 21, Hareesh 12). — Sports Correspondent
