As many as 1,578 booths were set up in the district

MYSORE: Children below the age of five in Mysore district were administered pulse polio drops as part of the second phase of the Pulse Polio drive on Sunday.

District Health Officer Krishnaswamy told The Hindu that the district administration had set up 1,578 booths in the district, including 360 at urban centres. "We are targeting all the 3,05,528 children below the age of five in the district during the pulse polio drive," he said.

Apart from setting up booths in primary health centres and other places, the district administration stationed medical and paramedical personnel at the railway station, bus stand and places of tourist interest such as St. Philomena's Church, Mysore Palace and Mysore zoo.

Apart from district administration officials and Government medical personnel, volunteers from social service organisations and paramedical staff from Government and private hospitals assisted the authorities in the drive. People began bringing children to the booths from 8 a.m. The drive continued till 5 p.m.

Door-to-door campaign

"Medical personnel from the Department of Health and Family Welfare will go on a door-to-door campaign for the next three days to administer polio drops to children who were not covered on Sunday," Dr. Krishnaswamy said. The drive will continue till May 24.

The first phase of the drive held from April 9 to 12 had elicited a good response, Dr. Krishnaswamy said.

"After tabulating the figures, we realised that the reach of the first phase of pulse polio drive in April was 100 per cent in rural areas and 99 per cent in urban areas", he said.

Health officer of Mysore City Corporation Nagaraj said that 292 booths had been set up in Mysore City. "We are aiming to reach an estimated 98,000 children residing in Mysore city during the drive," he said.
