Bangalore: The State unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has said that the issue of reservation in higher education should not be decided just by politicians and the Government. A decision on the matter should be taken only after arriving at a consensus through a national consultation.

Educationists, former judges, social workers, scientists and representatives of student organisations should be involved in a debate on the reservation system, representatives of ABVP suggested.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Prabhudev Kappgal, State secretary of the organisation, said the Government should increase the number of seats in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in government medical colleges.

The Government should ensure that when reservations are made, the benefit should go to backward sections among the backward castes.

Mr. Kappgal said one of their demands was that a White Paper on the status of reservation and its review be brought out. He demanded Central legislation to fix a realistic fee structure for professional courses in private institutions.
