Man killed in group clash in Bijapur

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: One person was killed and five were seriously injured following a clash between two groups at Deverahipparagi village in Sindagi on Wednesday night.

According to the police, Basavaraj Rajaram Metgar (45), who

was seriously injured in the clash, died while being taken to hospital. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital here.

The police have rounded up 40 accused, including Sindagi taluk. Cattle owned by Shankrappa Talwar had allegedly grazed in the fields belonging to Gurubasappa Madivalappa Bhavikatte and destroyed crop.

Compensation demand

The quarrel erupted following the Talwar family rejecting a compensation demand of Rs. 20,000. Both groups requested taluk panchayat member Patil to mediate and a meeting was held at Devarahipparagi on Wednesday evening, which failed to resolve the issue.

The members sided along caste lines and clashed. They indulged in stone-throwing.

Superintendent of Police Seemant Kumar Singh held a peace meeting on Thursday.
