TVS Interconnect ties up with Australian firm

Special Correspondent

Plans to set up unit for producing antennas of assorted bands

CHENNAI: To ease the pressure on telecom service providers who are caught between a galloping growth in subscriber base and drastic reduction in tariff rates, TVS Interconnect Systems Ltd. (TVSICS) has come out with a first-of-its-kind offer to build, operate and lease (BOL) structures for them. TVSICS has drawn up plans to put up around 700-800 towers across the country over the next couple of years. Biswajit Patnaik, General Manager, Sales and Marketing (Telecom), said the company had already signed up with a national level service provider to set up towers for it on BOL basis. TVSICS had also opened parleys with other service providers to join the BOL model. Basically, TVSICS would identify the location, erect the tower, put the antennas, provide cable connectivity and the like. It would also operate and maintain the tower.

Depending on its size, configuration and location, a tower could cost anything between Rs. 45 lakh and Rs. 80 lakh. The Rs. 121-crore turnover company, he said, was advantageously positioned to do this better since it made a host components like electronic connectors, radio frequency connectors, cable assemblies, and fibre optic products.

Mr. Patnaik said TVSICS was now planning to put up a plant for making antennas of assorted bands. The company had entered into a technical tie-up with Argus Technology of Australia for this. Along with Argus, the company was also putting up an antenna testing facility. The company had already landed an order for supply of 2,207 antennas to Reliance estimated at Rs. 4.70 crore. TVSICS proposed to invest Rs. 200 crore in the BOL project and Rs. 50 crore in the antenna venture. These would be funded through internal accruals, said S. Ashok, General Manager (Networking).
