BANGKOK: Two-lap specialist Pinki Paramanik, long jumper Mahan Singh and javelin thrower Anil Singh earned gold among a rich haul of medals by Indian athletes in the opening leg of the Asian Grand Prix circuit here on Thursday. Paramanik clocked 2:07.08 in the 800 metres in beating Uzbek Zamira Amirova (2:08.57) while the 20-year-old Bengal girl also claimed the silver in the 400 metres, coming behind Kazakhstan's Olga Tereshkova in a time of 53.86 seconds. Mahan Singh was way below his best of 7.99 metres in long jump with a leap of 7.55m, but that proved good enough for the gold, ahead of Kazakh Roman Valiyev (7.50m) and Chinese Li Xin (7.48m). Anil Singh who had come into prominence only last year, with his 76.31 at Hyderabad, won the javelin contest with a modest 72.87 metres. Chinese Liu Yanhong (70.76) and Uzbek Rinat Tarzumanov (70.37) took the silver and bronze while favourites Sergey Voinov of Uzbekistan (66.98) and Jagdish Bishnoi of India (67.69) finished sixth and fifth respectively. India had cause for disappointment when National record holder and Asian champion Manjeet Kaur finished third in the 400 metres with a timing of 54.86 seconds. On a day when many well-established stars turned in unbelievably mediocre performances, this was a setback for India no matter that Paramanik took the silver in the event. The unexpected rains and high humidity proved a handicap for the athletes. Yet, the abysmal standards in a majority of the events were mysterious and inexplicable. The women's discus title went for 56.99 metres, with Chinese Song Aimin who had logged a 65.23m last season, winning as expected. Indian Krishna Poonia managed 54.32m for the silver. India had five silver and four bronze medals in all apart from the three gold medals on Thursday. The circuit moves to Bangalore where the second leg is scheduled for May 22.
