DMK nominees for Speaker, Deputy Speaker

Special Correspondent

No contest likely in the May 19 elections

T. Aavudaiappan

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Wednesday nominated T. Aavudaiappan and V.P. Duraisamy as its candidates for the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

Elections to the posts will be held on May 19.

Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi announced the names to newsmen.

Though pro tem Speaker D. Sudarsanam has fixed May 19 for the elections, it will only be a formality as there may be no contest.

Speculation that the Deputy Speakership may be offered to an alliance party was also scotched with the announcement.

Mr. Aavudaiappan, a lawyer-turned politician, was elected to the House from Ambasamudram constituency in Tirunelveli district for the second time. His earlier stint was from 1996 to 2001.

He is also district secretary of the party and was chairman of the Tirunelveli District Cooperative Bank.

Mr. Duraisamy was elected from Sankagiri constituency in Salem district.

He is also a lawyer and had served as Deputy Speaker of the House during 1989 -91. He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1995-2001.
