Corrections and clarifications

In "India not invited to ACU meeting" (May 7, 2006), the reference to the "Asian Current Unit" is incorrect. It is the Asian Currency Unit (ACU), a proposed currency unit for the ASEAN "10+4" economic circle (ASEAN, China, India, Japan and South Korea). The ACU takes its inspiration from the now defunct European Currency Unit. The ACU, as it has been proposed, is as yet not a real currency, but a currency basket, i.e., a weighted index of East Asian currencies that will function as a benchmark for regional currency movements. The Asian Development Bank is currently reviewing different options concerning the technical aspects related to the ACU calculation.

The use of the word "confidante" in "Corrections and Clarifications" (May 9, 2006) is incorrect. It is "confidant" (especially in the context of the correction issued). A "confidant" (noun; feminine confidante) is "a person with whom one shares a secret or private matter".

The sentence in "Budhia medical report under study" ("Newscape", May 9, 2006) was: "The Orissa Government is considering refraining child runner Budhia Singh from long distance running and making arrangements for his training under a qualified coach or in a specialised institution to hone his running skills." A reader says "refraining" sounds odd. "Restraining" would have been a better choice of word.

In the report "Three national research professors appointed" (May 2, 2006), C.V. Raman, S.N. Bose, Satyajit Ray, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar were mentioned as holders of the post. A reader points out that the name of S.R. Ranganathan (1892-1972), father of the library science movement, is missing. In 1965, the Government of India appointed Ranganathan "National Research Professor of Library Science for life".
