`Recruit police personnel after psychological tests'

BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi on Tuesday asked the Police Department to modify recruitment rules to include psychological tests.

Speaking at the police medals presentation ceremony here, he said the recruitment rules should be modified and candidates aspiring to serve in the department made to take psychological tests. "This will help in selecting candidates according to requirements of posts. The tests should also be held frequently during service," he said.

Mr. Chaturvedi said it was necessary to provide training to police personnel to help them keep abreast of technological developments that help fight crime.

The police had an important role in a democratic country, the Governor said. They should handle sensitive situations and issues, such as communal conflicts and harassment of oppressed classes, effectively. Members of the public should help the police bring down the crime rate. "The police should strive to maintain peace," he added.

The Governor presented medals to police personnel.
