Give impetus to cooperative housing: MLA

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Congress MLA from Hastsal, Mukesh Sharma, has urged the Tejinder Khanna Committee to give impetus to the cooperative group housing societies movement in the Capital in order to fulfil the housing needs of the people and prevent the auction of land at exorbitant rates as such a policy would deprive the middle class of having a house of their own.

In his submissions made before the Committee, Mr. Sharma said the entire issue of demolitions and sealing needed to be studied carefully and a resolution has to be found for the problems that have cropped up during the past few years especially due to unauthorised constructions.

He said due to expanding families and declining job opportunities, people were forced to make alterations to their houses and flats to meet the growing needs and therefore the law should be amended in such a manner that such constructions are taken as genuine housing needs.

Mr. Sharma said instead of auctioning land at high rates, the Delhi Development Authority should allot land to cooperative housing societies and expansion should be allowed skywards on the lines of existing infrastructures in Mumbai. Pitching for giving a go-ahead to high-rise buildings, Mr. Sharma said that vacant land on both sides of the Metro Rail should be utilised for building housing complexes.
