Extortionist arrested
According to the police, for the past one month the Special Staff team had been on the trail of Abid Chaudhary, a resident of Shalimar Garden in Uttar Pradesh, for his alleged involvement in robbery and extortion cases. Acting on a tip-off that Abid would come to Mandwali on Wednesday, the police mounted a raid and arrested him.
`MCD employee' held
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East Delhi) D.C. Srivastava, they received a complaint from Rohtash Kumar alleging that a person claiming to be a MCD employee had extorted Rs. 400 from him for "allowing illegal construction". Subsequently, the police arrested the accused. During interrogation, he identified himself as Umesh Singh, a resident of Balbir Nagar Extension in Shahdara. He allegedly told the police that he was unemployed and wanted to make some quick bucks.
Auto-lifters nabbed
Twenty-year-old Jahir was arrested at Seelampur in North-East Delhi on Wednesday when he was found riding an allegedly stolen motorcycle. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to having stolen the vehicle along with his accomplice, Pappu. A hunt has been launched for Pappu. In another case, the South-West Delhi police arrested Ashok, Deepak Singh and Mohammad Azam Khan, all in their early 20s, on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. The accused were riding a motorcycle stolen from Vasant Kunj on February 7. At their instance, the police claimed to have solved four auto-theft cases. Naveen, also in his early 20s, was arrested at Vasant Kunj on charges of stealing a motorcycle from Mukherji Nagar in North-West Delhi.
Traffic police drive
Since April 24, the police have prosecuted 3,159 two-wheeler riders, of whom 2,688 were challaned for not wearing helmets, while 471 were found indulging in triple riding. A traffic police release on Thursday advised parents not to allow children below 18 years to drive vehicles.
Cheats strike
The police said that Kashi Ram was standing outside the hospital gate when two men approached him and sought change for a Rs. 100 note. As Kashi took out a Rs. 50 note from his pocket, the Rs. 15,000-bundle he was carrying also popped out. The men gave him a polythene bag in which to keep the money. On the pretext of wrapping the bundle properly, the culprits switched the bag with another one containing plain papers and vanished.
