He was brought from Mandya district prison for a court hearing

BANGALORE: An undertrial, who was brought here from the Mandya district prison on Wednesday, escaped from the custody of the policemen who were escorting him.

According to the police, Vijayendra (35) of Subramanyapura was brought to the city for a court hearing. Two constables of Mandya District Armed Reserve (DAR) brought a handcuffed Vijayendra in a KSRTC bus to Bangalore.

Around 11 a.m., the constables Mahesh and Rajesh, along with Vijayendra, got down from the bus near Chikkalalbagh in Upparpet police station limits.

The police had arranged for an autorickshaw to pick Vijayendra and the constables from near the Chikkalalbagh to the II Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Nrupatunga Road.

Constables threatened

After Vijayendra got into the autorickshaw near Chikkalalbagh, his associates arrived in a van and threatened the constables with a revolver and sped away, according to a complaint filed by the two constables with the Upparpet police.

After Vijayendra escaped, the two constables went to the court and waited for him till evening hoping that he would come there.

When he did not return, the two constables left for Mandya.

Higher-ups informed

On reaching Channapatna, the constables telephoned their higher-ups and informed them of Vijayendra'a escape.

On the instructions of senior officials, the two constables returned to Bangalore around 11.30 p.m. and lodged a complaint with the Upparpet police.

Lookout on

The Upparpet police, who are on the lookout for Vijayendra, suspect that the two DAR constables could have connived with the undertrial and facilitated his escape.
