|
CHENNAI:
General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday denied the charge of Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan that the State Government had ignored the health insurance scheme introduced by the Central Government for handloom weavers.
In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said though the State Government had to perform the task of only enrolling members for the insurance scheme implemented by the Centre jointly with the ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company from 2005-2006, it had remitted Rs. 2.60 crore towards the share of 1.30 lakh weavers at the rate of Rs. 200 per member.
Identity cards had also been issued to the beneficiaries, she said, adding that the State had enrolled the largest number of weavers under the insurance scheme.
Enrolled
More than 50 per cent of 2,60,959 weavers enrolled throughout the country belonged to the State, she pointed out.
