CHENNAI: Residents of Anjali Flats, Jaswant Nagar (Phase 1) in Mogappair West, have displayed a banner requesting candidates campaigning for the election not to enter their apartment.

The reason: residents say that despite several attempts they were unable to include their names in the electoral list.

R. Sridhar, president, Anjali Flats Residents' Welfare Association, said they have been running from pillar to post for the past six months to include their names in the voters list. The residents are upset that even after filling forms twice and submitting a list to the Special Electoral Officer in March 2006, they have been left out.

When the residents approached the Municipality, they were asked to go to Ponneri individually to submit the forms. Disappointed with officials' attitude, the 75 voters of the apartment that comes under the Villivakkam constituency have decided to boycott the vote-seeking candidates.

Similar problem

A similar problem is also brewing in Annai Flats, Mogappair West. With over 450 voters, residents here decided to boycott the elections for the absence of basic amenities in their locality. The Annai Flats Welfare Association put up a protest banner.

The councillor took strong exception to this. Accompanied a posse of men, he removed the banner on Wednesday night and threatened the building residents.

A resident said on condition of anonymity that the association has filed a complaint regarding the highhandedness of the councillor at the Thirumangalam Police Station.
