CHENNAI: The music fraternity paid its tributes to legendary nagaswaram maestro Thiruvengadu Subramania Pillai during his birth centenary celebrations organised by the Nagaswara Chakravarthy Dr. Thiruvengadu Subramania Pillai Trust here on Wednesday. The pioneering musical contributions of Dr. Pillai had contributed to the glory of Carnatic music, dancer Padma Subramanyam said. `Thavil' maestro Harithuvaramangalam A.K. Palanivel, Carnatic musician R. Vedavalli, clarinet exponent A.K.C. Natarajan, former Chennai Doordarshan director A. Natarajan and contemporaries of Dr. Pillai recalled the glory of his music. Philanthropist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti was conferred the `Kalachara Kavalar' title by P.R. Gokulakrishnan, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. T.N.R. Pappammal, wife of another legendary nagaswaram player Thiruvavaduthurai T.N. Rajarathinam Pillai, was presented with a cash award. A souvenir and a CD, comprising the recordings of Dr. Pillai, were also released on the occasion.
