KOLKATA: Devang Jayant Gandhi, a mainstay of Bengal and East Zone teams, retired from first class cricket here on Tuesday after a career spanning 12 years. One of the hardest hitters in domestic cricket, this Bhavnagar (Gujarat) born cricketer, played four Tests and three ODIs for India. On his return from down under after touring with the Indian team, Gandhi was never selected to play again for the country. At 34, Gandhi, who played this season, attributed lack of motivation to continue as the reason to retire. He will, however, continue to play club cricket and county cricket in England. ``My motivation level to play first class cricket has gone down,'' he said at a press conference at the Eden Gardens. Gandhi said winning the Deodhar Trophy as captain a few years back was the best moment in his career that began in 1994-95. Interestingly, Bengal played the Ranji Trophy final the earlier season and again figured this season. On both occasions, Bengal ended second best to Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh, respectively. He, however did not play in this year's final. Gandhi made way for Abhishek Jhunjhunwala in a league match against Gujarat. The genial top-order batsman is a qualified level II coach (from London) and will further his coaching career only after quitting from even club games. Special Correspondent
