Ernakulam, Kollam lift titles

Kochi: Ernakulam and Kollam won the men's and women's team titles respectively in the KCM Mather memorial inter-district tennis tournament at the RSC Centre on Saturday.

Govind Ram Mohan played a big role in Ernakulam's 2-1 win over Thiruvananthapuram. Govind trounced Binoj Mani 6-2, 6-2 to enable Ernakulam split the singles 1-1 after Binu Mani had overcame Rynold Timothy 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to give Thiruvananthapuram the lead.

The pair of Govind and Rynold then downed the duo of Binu and Binoj 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the tie.

Kollam overcame Thiruvananthapuram 2-1 to take the women's title. G. Preethi was outstanding for Kollam as she won both her singles and doubles matches.

The results: Finals (men): Ernakulam bt Thiruvananthapuram 2-1 (Rynold Timothy lost to Binu Mani 6-4, 4-6, 4-6; Govind Ram Mohan bt Binoj Mani 6-3, 6-2; Rynold Timothy/Govind Ram Mohan bt Binu Mani/Binoj Mani 6-7, 6-3, 6-3).

Women: Kollam bt Thiruvananthapuram 2-1 (G. Preethi bt Neelima Sanjai 8-4; Nisha Nair lost to V. Parvathy 5-8; G. Preethi/G. Nisha bt Neelima Sanjai/V. Parvathy 8-4). — Principal Correspondent
