SAAP increases coaches' salary

HYDERABAD: The Board of Directors of Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh has increased the salaries (consolidated) of the coaches by Rs. 2,000 with immediate effect. This will benefit 37 coaches recruited in 1993 and 27 more in 1998. And, more importantly, they will also be eligible for all the benefits and facilities being enjoyed by the Grade III coaches as of now.

Briefing the media on the Board deliberations, M.S. Raj Thakur, SAAP chairman, said that simultaneous efforts would be on to see that the services of these coaches would be regularised as early as possible.

Some of the other major decisions taken include setting up of advertisement hoardings at all SAAP stadia by inviting tenders to raise funds and setting up of a huge commercial complex at Lal Bahadur Stadium for the same purpose.

Agreement reached

"The Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (Warangal) and SAAP had already reached an agreement in this regard for the DSA Stadium there on the one acre land," Raj Thakur said. "Henceforth, all the sports infrastructure in the State will be available for any educational institution for sporting or recreational activity at 50 per cent of the actual rentals," he added.

The Board also finalised the budget for the year 2006-07 which includes Rs. 3.56 crores for Academies and maintenance, Rs 2.10 crores for the conduct of Chief Minister's Cup next month-end at Swarnandhra Pradesh Sports Complex in Gachibowli, Rs. 75 lakhs for competitions, Rs. 82 lakhs as annual grants, Rs. 20 lakhs for purchase of sports equipment, Rs. 50 lakhs for rural sports, Rs. 50 lakhs for cash incentives, Rs. 75 lakhs as special grant for Sports Associations, Rs. 1.20 crores under the Special Component Plan for the benefit of Scheduled Casts Rs.1.32 crores for tribal sports.

G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, SAAP VC & MD, informed that besides, the best coaches (both men and women) will be conferred with the annual State awards and cash incentives of Rs. 1 lakh each will be given like Alluri Sitaramaraju and Rani Rudramadevi awards for best athletes. Departing from established norms, SAAP has also recommended to the Fateh Maidan Club to ensure membership for all the sports journalists and coaches, Mr Rao said.

Malleswara wins title

J. Malleswara Rao of Vijayawada won the State Open chess tournament in Tuni by virtue of better progressive score, according to information received here.

At the end of seven rounds, Malleswara Rao, B. Ramana Babu (East Coast Railway) and D. Lakshmana Rao (Eluru) were tied with six points each. But Malleswara emerged winner when the tie-breaker rule was applied. He was also richer by Rs. 3,500.
