CHENNAI : Trade unions and women organisations came together on Tuesday to support the struggle to rehabilitate theNarmada dam oustees, as also the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy. `National Action Day' was primarily organised to focus on the plight of thousands of families that have been displaced due to the Narmada dam construction, said Unorganised Workers Federation secretary R. Leelavathi.
Rehabilitation
"Thirty-five thousand families are yet to be rehabilitated. Two hundred and twenty villages will be submerged when the dam height is raised from 110m to 121m." She pointed out that despite the Supreme Court judgment that the height cannot be increased unless rehabilitation is completed , there has been no "proper rehabilitation." The group consisting of the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers' Movement and other organisations sent a memorandum stating their support to the displaced people's struggle for justice to the Prime Minister.
