Golden double for Samaresh

Jalandhar: Samaresh Jung claimed his second gold as CISF shooters won top positions in two events out of three on the penultimate day of the fourth Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Masters memorial shooting championship here on Thursday.

The Commonwealth Games hero, representing Central Industrial Security Force, shot 567 (192+192+183) points out of a possible 600 points in the 25 metres standard pistol event for men. C.K. Chaudhary of Army won the silver with a total of 564 (191+188+185) points, while Olympian Jaspal Rana of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation finished third with 558 (189+192+177) points.

Samaresh had earlier clinched gold in 50 metres free pistol event with a new National record tally of 570 points on the inaugural day. He had also pocketed a bronze in the centre fire event.

Sonia Rana triumphs

Meanwhile, Samaresh's compatriot Sonia Rana claimed the gold in the 100 metres pistol for women. The CISF shooter secured 382 (97+94+97+94) points. The silver also went to CISF with

Amu Raj Singh shooting 380 points (92+94+97+97), while Shweta Chaudhary of Indian Airlines won the bronze with 374 (93+93+93+95) points.

Olympian Deepali Deshpande won the gold medal in the 50 metres free pistol for women with a score of 575 points. Kuheli Gangulee of CISF settled for the silver with 570 points, while Maharashtra's Tejaswini Sawant, who won the 10 metres air rifle gold on Wednesday, secured the bronze with 567 points.

The second trials of free rifle prone and standard rifle prone, centre fire pistol and air pistol for men will also commence on Friday.

The results: Men (25 metres standard pistol): 1. Samaresh Jung (CISF) 567; 2. C.K. Chaudhary (Army) 564; 3. Jaspal Rana (ONGC) 558.

Women (10 metres pistol): 1. Sonia Rana (CISF) 382; 2. Annu Raj Singh (CISF) 380; 3. Shweta Chaudhary (Indian Airlines) 374; (50 metres rifle): 1. Deepali Deshpande 575; 2. Kuheli Gangulee (CISF) 570; 3. Tejaswani Sawant (Mah) 567. — UNI
