Buddha Jayanti celebrations
The event starts with an international seminar on "Global Peace Performance" that will be inaugurated by Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy on Saturday. It will be followed by an academic session on "Paths to Peace". A large number of delegates from Japan are expected to attend the show. On Sunday, Buddha Jayanti celebrations at Buddha Jayanti Smarak Park will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. "Walk with Buddha for Peace" will be the theme of the day.
Centre for senior citizens' inaugurated
Ms. Khullar said the centre should be named "Harsh" so that the people enjoying its facilities may also get the feeling of enthusiasm and happiness. "The double-storey complex will have a hall for get-together and yoga, a recreation centre, along with office, kitchen and other essential services. The multi-purpose centre has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.60 lakhs.
World Health Day celebrated
Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri applauded Asha's efforts and said there was need for more such NGOs who could turn around the lives of people living in slums. Amnesty International Director (Strategy) Harry Hummel was among the distinguished guests who attended the function. Asha coordinator Ambika Rajvanshi informed that there are 1,500 slums in Delhi and an estimated 40-lakh people live in them.
Orientation programme for parents held
The school's chairman, Prafulla Goradia, urged parents to be "partners in education". The parents in turn lit earthen lamps to mark the auspicious beginning of their child's education.
