Bridge course for I PUC students

MYSORE: St. Thomas PU College at Visveswarnagar here will conduct summer classes in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, English and commerce with special emphasis on learning the basic concepts in these subjects.

Practical instructions to conduct experiments will be imparted to students in newly equipped laboratories and retired professors will be engaging the classes. Candidates who will enrol for the I year PUC course during the academic year 2006-07 may register before April 10 for the bridge course. Heart check-up camp on April 11, 12

MYSORE: BGS Apollo Hospital and Mysore Royal City Jaycees have organised a heart-care camp on April 11 and 12 at the BGS Apollo Hospital.

In house consultants Sunil Kumar, Anand, Ramakrishna and others will screen the patients and relevant investigations such as ECG and TMT will be conducted at a nominal cost.

The cost of coronary angiogram will be subsidised.

Needy patients requiring angioplasty, pacemaker implantation, bypass surgery etc will be given a 50 per cent concession.

Cancer detection camp

MYSORE: Preethi Centre for Oncology on M.G. Road (Vani Vilas Double Road) here will conduct a free cancer detection camp on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Patients suffering from abnormal bleeding, swelling, lump in any part of the body, change of voice or difficulty in swallowing may attend the camp.

Summer camp for children

MYSORE: Samata Adhyayana Kendra here will conduct a summer camp for children between 6 and 16 years from April 10 to 30, according to a press release.

The camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. every day and only 25 students will be enrolled for the camp.

Differences sorted out

PANAJI: The simmering differences between the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (I) president Ravi Naik and Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane, which were creating a division among local partymen, were sorted out amicably by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, according to reports reaching here. Sources in the ruling Congress here said that at a meeting held in the presence of Ms. Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, which was attended by Naik, Rane and AICC(I) general secretary in charge of Goa Margaret Alva, the differences were sorted out. — Special Correspondent

Indefinite fast

Belgaum: With no response to its four-day-old hunger strike, leaders of the district Kannada Rakshana Vedike began an indefinite fast in front of the office of the Regional Commissioner for North Karnataka here on Wednesday. The vedike is demanding establishment of a Law University and holding of legislature sessions in Belgaum. The Government has proposed to set up a Law University in Hubli, which the vedike is opposed to. The Government must take up more development works in the border district of Belgaum, which has for long been neglected, the vedike said. — Staff Correspondent

ICT conference from today

Bangalore: The World Customs Organisation (WCO) will organise an information and communication technology (ICT) conference and exhibition from Thursday to Saturday here. Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will inaugurate it. Nearly 100 delegates from abroad are expected to participate in the conference. The agenda is "Outsourcing and off shoring of IT - a challenge for customs." The conference will discuss the developments in ICT for customs and will explore aspects relating to outsourcing and off shoring and identify opportunities and challenges for the management of customs IT. It will also examine the relationship between outsourcing and public-private partnerships. — Special Correspondent

Bank's achievement

BANGALORE: Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd. has reached a milestone in its 90-year-old history with its deposits reaching Rs. 2,262 crore, capital investment of Rs. 3,700 crore and registering a net profit of Rs. 27.27 crore during 2005-06. President of the bank M.N. Rajendrakumar told presspersons here on Wednesday that 21 district central cooperative banks in the State had advanced Rs. 1,762.52 crore through 4,587 primary land development banks. Of the advances, Rs. 1,111. 88 crore has been given to the agriculture sector and rest for non-agricultural purposes, he added. — Staff Reporter

Two children drown

DAVANGERE: Two children who had gone for a swim in a check dam drowned at Basapura village on Tuesday. The names of the victims have been given as Imran Khan Pathan, 14, and Mohammed Khan Pathan, 12. The police said Imran was studying in seventh standard in Hubli. He came to his relative's house in Davangere a few days ago. Mohammed Khan was studying in sixth standard in local school. Imran and Mohammed along with their friend Samir Khan had gone for a swim. — Staff Correspondent

Two killed in accident

Chitradurga: Two persons were killed when a mini-truck in which they were travelling collided with another truck on National Highway 4 near here on Wednesday. The police said the mini-truck was proceeding to Bangalore from Sangli when the accident occurred. While one person was killed on the spot, another succumbed to injuries at the district hospital. - UNI

Girl run over by tractor

DAVANGERE : Vrinda, a three-year-old girl. was run over by a tractor in Chennagiri. The police said she had gone out of the `anganawadi' centre to answer nature's call. The police have registered a case and are investigating. - Staff Correspondent

Warning to officials

Bidar: Agriculture Minister and district-in-charge Bandeppa Kashempur warned officials of disciplinary action if they fail to take steps to check the spread of leptospirosis and Chikun Gunya in the district, Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil said at a meeting in Bidar on Wednesday.

He told mediapersons that 15 fogging machines had already reached the district. Another 85 would arrive in a week, he said.

He ordered legal action against nine doctors appointed on contract basis at primary health centres who had not joined duty. — Staff Correspondent

President arrives in Bangalore today

Bangalore: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will arrive here on Thursday to attend various engagements here and at Tumkur and Madikeri.

He will attend the 99th birthday celebrations of Shivakumara Swamiji of Sri Siddaganga Math at 10.30 a.m. at Tumkur on Friday.

He will later attend the birth centenary function of the former Chief of Army Staff Gen. K.S. Thimayya in Madikeri.

In the afternoon, the President will inaugurate Students' Legal Literacy Club at the Jnanajyoti auditorium on the Central College campus (3.30 p.m.) here and inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka High Court at 5 p.m. — Special Correspondent

Chief Minister for Belgaum

Belgaum: Chief Minister H.D. Kumarswamy will visit the district for two days to participate in series of programmes on April 8 and 9.

According to official sources, members of public can submit their grievances to the officials between 9 a.m. to noon at Circuit House on April 8. Subsequently, the Chief Minister will look into these grievances and respond for about half an hour from 12.30 to 1 p.m.

Also, several functions have been organised with Mr. Kumaraswamy as the chief guest in different parts of the city same day. Next day, he will visit Chikkodi. — Staff Correspondent

USIACC launches India headquarters

Bangalore: The United States Indian American Chamber of Commerce (USIACC) on Wednesday announced the launch of its India headquarters in Bangalore.

The USIACC was established in 2004 in Washington DC with a mandate to promote trade and investment between the two countries, strengthening relationships between Indian and U.S. business in the small and medium enterprises space, its national chairman K.V.
