NEW DELHI: The National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to review the Sardar Sarovar Project from the point of view of resettlement and rehabilitation of the displaced. In a letter to Dr. Singh, the NFIW has said that it was most disappointing that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government had ``deviated from its commitment to follow people-oriented policies, and was proving to be no better than the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government that the people had voted out.'' Drawing Dr. Singh's attention to the hunger strike by the Narmada Bachao Andolan activists, the letter urged him to intervene to save lives. The NFIW pointed out that the decision to raise the height of the dam to 121 ft violated the Supreme Court's order. ``The whole issue of raising the height of the dam from time to time over the years makes a very sordid tale which has seen the violation of the basic laws, the violation of the Supreme Court judgements and human rights of thousands of displaced people,'' the letter added.
