INAUGURATED: US Consulate Public Affairs Officer Christopher Wurst with actor Suhasini Maniratnam and Saundarya Rajesh, CEO of Avtar Career, at the inauguration of a film festival organised by the Madras Film Society to commemorate `Women's History Month' in Chennai on Thursday.
CHENNAI: It's 'Women's History Month' in America and to celebrate it the Office of Public Affairs US Consulate General for South India has organised screening of three all-American films about different kinds of women. The screenings are at The Film Chamber Theatre, Gemini Circle, and are organised with the help of The Madras Film Society and AVTAR Career Creators. Suhasini Maniratnam, who has played several roles of the Indian woman in 185 films spanning five languages was the chief guest. She said that initially she watched only European and Iranian films because the characters were straight out of life. American and Indian actors were just too beautiful to identify with. American films too have become more realistic in the last few years, said Ms Suhasini. And hopefully, Indian films would follow suit, she said. Saundarya Rajesh, from Avtar, a recruitment consulting firm, was present in her role as a woman entrepreneur. The inaugural film was `Joy Luck Club,' based on the book by Amy Tan. It spans the lives of two generations of American Chinese women. On March 31, `Dangerous Minds' starring Michelle Pfeiffer and on April 1, `Thelma and Louise' with Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis were screened.
