KOLKATA: The Election Commission has directed that in the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal voters be photographed in areas earmarked "sensitive" and where photo identity cards have not been distributed to the electorate. This is part of the commission's initiative to prevent malpractices during the elections. In all 3,000 digital cameras had been procured for installation in sensitive booths for the purpose, the State's Chief Electoral Officer, Debashis Sen, said here on Thursday. He declined to disclose the booths where the cameras would be installed. So far 92 per cent of the State's electorate had been given photo identity cards, according to Mr. Sen. The first of the five-phase elections in the State is to be held on April 17. The Election Commission has already announced that Central paramilitary forces will be deployed inside the booths to ensure peaceful polls. The digital cameras are expected to be put in operation in several booths in the three south-western districts where the security situation has been a cause for concern given the recent Maoist incidents.
