`Janata Darshan' programme today

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will hold the weekly "Janata Darshan" programme at his home office, "Krishna," here at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday, according to an official press release.

JD(S) deputy leader, whip named

BANGALORE: H.K. Kumaraswamy, MLA for Belur in Hassan district, and K. Andani, MLA for Malavalli, have been appointed deputy leader and whip of the Janata Dal (Secular) Legislature Party respectively. This was announced by Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna on Friday.

The former Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge urged the Speaker to reconsider recognising the two as they have been suspended from the party for extending support to the coalition Government.

Transport Minister C. Cheluvaraya Swamy said no member can question the Speaker's decision. — Special Correspondent

Steps taken to check leptospirosis: Minister

BANGALORE: Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday that the Government has posted additional doctors and provided two ambulances to the government hospital at Pavagada in Tumkur district to control the spread of leptospirosis.

Replying to a debate on a call attention notice from K.M. Thimmarayappa (JD-S), Mr. Ashok said a committee headed by the District Health Officer has been constituted to take preventive measures. While cases of leptospirosis and dengue have been detected, no one has been diagnosed with malaria, he said. Six doctors have been posted to the hospital at Pavagada and adequate supply of drugs has been ensured, the Minister said.

Provide funds for circuit Benches: Patil

BANGALORE: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council H.K. Patil has urged the Government to release at least Rs. 100 crores for the two circuit Benches of the High Court to be set up in Hubli-Dharwad and Gulbarga.

Initiating the discussion on the State Budget for 2006-07 on Thursday, Mr. Patil said Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa should be congratulated for his concern for farmers. But the Government should clarify what arrangements have been made to enable cooperative banks to provide farm loans at four per cent interest, he said. — Staff Reporter

Chain snatched

MYSORE: Two unidentified miscreants forced their way into a house on Raghavendra Swamy Math Road in the city on Thursday afternoon and snatched a gold chain valued at Rs. 50,000 from the housewife. Police said the unidentified youths, aged around 25, entered the house of retired general manager of BEML Ravindranath on the pretext of asking for an address. The Jayalakshmipuram police have registered a case and are investigating. - Staff Correspondent

City bus service

Bidar: The North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has launched city bus service in Bidar. "We will operate 35 trips a day. Buses will ply from Naubad to Gumpa, Naubad to Mailoor, and Naubad to the District Hospital. The rates will be Rs. 3 for less than two km, Rs. 4 from Naubad to the Central Bus Stand, Rs. 5.50 for Naubad to Mailoor and Naubad to Gumpa," Divisional Controller T.N. Awareness rally on tuberculosis

HUBLI: An awareness rally on tuberculosis was organised here on Friday as part of World Tuberculosis Day. Students of various colleges, officials of the Department of Health and Family Welfare and other departments took part in the rally. The rally, which was flagged off from the Indira Glass House, passed through the thoroughfares of the city before concluding at the Chitguppi Hospital. Senior health officials who spoke on the occasion underscored the need for creating awareness among the people about the disease. Youth Congress activists burn effigy

HUBLI: Members of the Indian Youth Congress staged a protest here on Friday and burnt the effigy of Bharatiya Janata Party and its allied parties alleging that they were responsible for the resignation of Sonia Gandhi from the Lok Sabha. Addressing the protestors, Shakir Sanadi, chairman of Policy, Planning and Programming Implementation of Indian Youth Congress, said no party has the moral right to comment on Ms.Gandhi's action. Anilkumar Patil, former Mayor of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, and Rajshekhar Mensinkai, Youth Congress leader, spoke. Babajan Mudhol, Yusuf Bellary, Nazir Ahmed Kolkar, Viranna Hirehal and others took part in the agitation. — Staff Correspondent
