CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Thursday lauded the role of Hindi weekly South Chakra and said: "It has bridged the gap between Tamil and Hindi." Presenting awards to senior journalists, writers and social workers on behalf of the weekly, the Governor highlighted the role of responsible journalism in fostering national integration.

The Governor released a souvenir on the occasion.

Successful landmark

N. Vittal, former Central Vigilance Commissioner, said that South Chakra was a successful landmark of journalism in Tamil Nadu and celebrated the real essence of Indian culture of talking different languages.

Mohammed Abdul Ali, Prince of Arcot, said that in the name of freedom of speech and expression, the media should be careful not to hurt the feelings of other communities.

S. Mohan, former Judge, Supreme Court, said the magazine started in 1995, with a circulation of 2000 readers, was now reaching 40,000 subscribers.

"Language is nothing more than communication of thoughts and emotions. One can love a language, but let us not be fanatical about it," he said.

Editor of South Chakra V.K. Agarwal said the role of the media was to give shape to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's `Vision 2020.'
