WARM RECEPTION: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash karat with DMK president M. Karunanidhi at the latter's residence in Chennai on Saturday.
CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi on Saturday said the process of identification of seats to be contested by the constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in the May 8 Assembly elections will be concluded "in two or three days." Shortly after meeting Prakash Karat, general secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), at his Gopalapuram residence, Mr. Karunanidhi told reporters here that the selection of candidates would be taken up only after identifying seats allocated to DPA partners.
Transfer issue
Replying to queries on two former Directors-General of Police filing petitions in the Madras High Court challenging the Election Commission's communication on transfer of Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj, the DMK chief said that he was watching the developments. On the legal propriety of former DGP Walter I. Davaram, who held an "office of profit" as vice-president of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, in filing the petition, Mr. Karunanidhi said if the EC's message could be challenged, the former's move could also be dubbed improper as per law.
Karat's assurance
Mr. Karat, after holding discussions with Mr. Karunanidhi along with State CPI (M) secretary N. Varadarajan and State secretariat member G.Ramakrishnan, expressed satisfaction at the seat-sharing arrangement. He hoped that the CPI (M)'s "long record of cooperation and good relations with the DMK would go towards providing the people of Tamil Nadu a new Government." Mr. Karat said identification of seats allotted to the CPI (M) was being finalised.
