High salaries in the BPO sector at what cost?

Staff Reporter

  • BPO executives need to be with their family during major festivals
  • Many get into depression on not being able to communicate with their family
  • Seeking career counselling is common among people working in call centres and BPO firms

Bangalore: "It has been frustrating for I have not been able to catch up with my sister who has just delivered a baby. I never find time to interact with my family at home after I started working on the graveyard shift," rues Nishanth, a call centre employee in Bangalore.

"After my college days, I somehow managed to quit smoking; now I smoke at least 11 cigarettes a day," says Rashmika (name changed on request), yet another business process outsourcing (BPO) employee.

Get to list the problems of ITES professionals and it runs endlessly, says Union of ITES Professionals (UNITES) General Secretary Karthik Shekar.

A survey conducted by UNITES in collaboration with the professors from IIM, Ahmedabad revealed that the BPO employees seek guidance to deal with problems related to their family, career and stress at work.

"BPO executives are required to work on all other public holidays and during festivals, which only adds to burnout. While satisfaction studies conducted globally may not put the lack of adequate leave as one of the key parameters, what could be relevant is to delve deeper into the Indian psyche," he says.
