K. Shankar
CHENNAI: Veteran film editor and director K. Shankar died of a heart attack at his residence at 7 p.m. on Sunday. He was 80. Kunnesscri Shankar was born on March 17, 1926. He started his film career as a editor at the popular AVM studio, before venturing into film direction. His first directorial venture was a Sinhalese movie, "Doctor." From then on, he did not look back. He has directed three Chief Ministers MGR ("Adimaipen" and "Kudiyiruntha Koil"); N.T. Rama Rao ("Bhookailash") and Jayalalithaa ("Gowri Kalyanam"). Mr. Shankar directed more than 80 films in all the South Indian languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam as well as in Hindi. In his later years, he directed devotional films such as "Thai Mookambigai" and "Varuvan Vadivelan." His last public function was only a few days ago where he got the State Government's Raja Sandow award from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Mr. Shankar is survived by wife and six children.
