Pedalling hard to spread AIDS message

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: Six youth from Tiruchi are on a cycle expedition to Chennai to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS. By the time they are home again, they would have pedalled more than 600 km through several districts of Tamil Nadu. They reached Tambaram on Friday morning tired but not worn out.

Placards

The youth, who belong to the Thiruvalluvar Kalai Mandram, carried placards on their cycles with messages about the importance of spreading love and affection among those infected with HIV/AIDS.

Diverse backgrounds

They hail from diverse backgrounds: Vadivel is a dance teacher; Vinodh Kumar a college student; Ganesh sells snacks; Anandhan is a gunny bag maker; Jayachandran a vegetable vendor, while Purushothaman is convener of the Kalai Mandram.

The youth said they were inspired by similar programmes to embark on the cycle expedition. Apart from distributing pamphlets to residents, motorists and passers-by on the dos and don'ts to prevent HIV/AIDS, they made it a point to speak to lorry drivers, among the most vulnerable sections.
