Moddu Sreenu custody extended

ANANTAPUR: The judicial custody of Moddu Sreenu in the Paritala Ravindra murder case was extended up to March 8 by Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate A. Jayaraj here on Wednesday.

The remand of Suri and seven others, including Moddu Sreenu, in the Tagarakunta Prabhakar murder case was also extended till March 8.

Sreenu later told newsmen on the court premises that summer in Anantapur was pleasant. - Staff Reporter

Vizag port sets new mark

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has surpassed its previous year's highest traffic of 50.147 million tonnes, the highest among all major ports, by handling 50.151 million tonnes 31 days ahead of the current fiscal. A total traffic of 50.151 million tonnes was handled up to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, against 45.041 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period last year , according to a VPT spokesman. - Special Correspondent

Aid for 11 coop sugar factories

HYDERABAD: The National Cooperative Development Corporation sanctioned Rs.200 crores to Andhra Pradesh to part finance revival/restructuring of 11 cooperative sugar factories, a press release issued by the corporation said on Wednesday.

Given at an interest rate of 9.5 per cent, the assistance would be passed to the factories by the State Cooperative Bank. - Special Correspondent

Telugu federation meet at Dubai

VISAKHAPATNAM: The seventh biennial international conference of the World Telugu Federation (WTF) will be celebrated at Dubai from April 12 to 14.

WTF president V.L. Indira Dutt told reporters here that the conference would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. - Staff Reporter

National award for JVV

HYDERABAD: The Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV), a voluntary science organisation working in the State, received the prestigious national award for "Outstanding Effort in Science and Technology Communication" for 2005 by the Science and Technology Ministry.

The award, comprising Rs. 2 lakhs in cash, a memento and a citation, was presented on February 27 at the National Science Day celebrations in New Delhi, according to a press release issued by JVV president A. Ramachandraiah here. - Special Correspondent

Two students die in road accident

KADAPA: Two engineering students were killed and another was severely injured when a tractor hit the motorcycle they were riding near Madhavaram I village in Siddhavatam mandal on Wednesday. Rahul Reddy, 21, and Vijayabhaskar, 22, died on the spot. Their classmate Santha Kumar who was grievously hurt was rushed to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati. - Staff Reporter

Man axes two to death

Rajahmundry: Talluri Srinu, 28, a daily-wage worker, axed his wife Nagamma and his father-in-law P. Veerabhadra Rao, 50, to death at Narayanapuram in the early hours of Wednesday. His mother-in-law Varalakshmi, 45, and brother-in-law Chinna, 20, who were also attacked, were admitted to Rajahmundry Civil Hospital with grievous injuries, Additional SP Anjuri Radha said. Srinu is absconding with nine-month-old boy. Srinu suspected the fidelity of his wife and allegedly used to harass her. After delivery, Nagamma's parents refused to send her with Srinu. - Staff Reporter

Kakinada: District Civil Supplies authorities seized 2,690 litres of blue kerosene meant for public distribution during raids conducted at various places in Jagannadhapuram area in the city on Tuesday. - Correspondent

Three-phase power supply to ryots

KADAPA: APSPDCL will ensure three-phase power supply for seven hours a day to agricultural consumers, its Chairman and Managing Director P. Gopal Reddy said in a statement here.

He said non-functional transformers would be promptly replaced. Agricultural consumers could intimate problems to load monitoring cell at Kadapa on phone No. 242811 or cell Nos. 94408 11909 or 94408 17440, he said. — Staff Reporter

Nominated to Telugu varsity senate

TIRUPATI: The Government has nominated P. Narasimha Reddy, Dean of the SVU's School of Humanities and Extension Studies to the Academic Senate of of Potti Sraramulu Telugu Viswa Vidyalayam, Hyderabad. A two-time recipient of Telugu Sahithya Academy award, he has authored about 20 books. — Special Correspondent

Info commissioner to tour Kadapa

KADAPA: State Information Commissioner R. Dileep Reddy will tour Kadapa district on March 2 and 3. He will interact with Collector G. Asok Kumar and district officials at Collectorate on Right to Information Act 2005 at 10.45 a.m. on March 2.

He will attend a seminar on the Act, organised by Lok Satta at Badvel at 3.30 p.m. and make a night halt at Badvel.

Mr. Dileep Reddy will attend programmes at Rajampet and Brahmanapalle on March 3 and would leave for Hyderabad by Venkatadri Express, an official release said. — Staff Reporter
