Students join awareness campaign

CHENNAI: Thirty students of a city college teamed up to fight cancer.

The first round of the battle began on Monday, when the team from MOP Vaishnav College for Women in Nungambakkam launched a cancer awareness/ prevention campaign. It gets technical support from Cancer Institute, Adyar, and financial support from the Rotary Club of Madras.

The students of II M.A. Public Relations have formed five groups. Armed with posters, brochures and 12-minute short films, they will fan into the city's corporation schools and target children and faculty members who smoke and drink. Each group has a target audience.

Team `Prajha' will campaign among students of VIII, IX and XI standards in Sacred Heart Matric Hr. Sec. School (Tamil medium), Assumption Hr. Sec. School, Thousand Lights Corporation Middle and Higher Secondary schools and the Valluvar Kottam Corporation School. `Asha' will campaign in Vidya Mandir, Adyar and Mylapore, Seetha Kingston and Hindu Senior Matric; `Sanjeevani' in University of Madras, Guru Nanak College, Agarsen College and IIPM; `Dhanvanthri' in Quaid E Milleth, Anna Adarsh, GSS Jain College and SDNB Vaishnav College besides the host college. `Dharana' will dispel the myths about cancer among the faculty members in MOP, DG Vaishnav College, Kola Perumal School, Kola Saraswati School and Chinmaya Vidyalaya.

V. Shanta, Cancer Institute chairperson, on Monday launched the weeklong campaign and urged students to ensure a tobacco-free society.

Ravi Kannan, chief surgical oncologist, and Rotarians Shanker C. Mangadu, George B. Cherian and Praveen and college principal K. Nirmala Prasad and P. Haridas, secretary, spoke.
