Publication of voters' list for Palakkad, Kasaragod withheld

Special Correspondent

Election Commission releases list for 124 constituencies

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Election Commission has published the `final' list of voters for Kerala on Monday, withholding the lists for Palakkad and Kasaragod districts following detection of `abnormal increase' in the total number of voters in Chittur (Palakkad) and Manjeswaram (Kasaragod) Assembly constituencies.

The voters' list for Chittur and Manjeswaram are currently being scrutinised by observers appointed by the Election Commission. This has forced the Commission to withhold the lists for as many as 16 constituencies, 11 in Palakkad and five in Kasaragod. The voters' list for these constituencies would be published after the scrutiny is over. The list for the remaining 124 constituencies, released on Monday, would be made available on the touch-screen facility at the 14 district collectorates and 63 taluk offices in the State. The lists would also be available at the website `ceokerala.nic.in' in about a week.

Kerala has set a record of sorts for the country by coming out with the first photo-affixed voters' list for the entire State. Going by the list published now, the district with the highest number of voters is Malappuram with 22.06 lakh voters. Thiruvananthapuram is second with 21.23 lakh voters. The Assembly constituency with the highest number of voters is Nilambur in Malappuram with 2,00,729 voters. The constituency with the second highest number of voters is also in Malappuram district, Wandoor (SC) with 2,00,112 voters. The total number of voters, excluding those in Palakkad and Kasaragod is 1.86 crores. This figure has been arrived after adding 7.49 lakh voters to the draft electoral roll and deleting 2.77 lakh voters from it. The exact strength of the electorate in the State as a whole would be known only after the publication of the full list.

The following is total strength of voters in 12 districts: Kannur - 15,40,758, Wayanad - 5,18,028, Kozhikode - 19,34,680, Malappuram - 22,06,928, Thrissur - 20,91,334, Ernakulam - 20,86,404, Idukki - 7,87,011, Kottayam - 13,52,077, Alappuzha - 14,62,630, Pathanamthitta - 8,23,706, Kollam - 17,24,689 and Thiruvananthapuram - 21,23,641.
