CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday said the State Government would implement 11 new irrigation projects at a total cost of Rs.18.98 crore. In a statement here, she said the implementation of these projects with funds provided by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development would enable the farmers to irrigate 10,968 acres in Tuticorin, Madurai, Pudukottai, Salem, Tiruchy, Tiruvallur, Perambalur, Namakkal and Krishnagiri districts. The Government had made allocations for Rs. 83.66 lakh for strengthening and maintaining the Mettur dam in Salem district, Rs. 92.46 lakh for digging a supply canal for the Kayamozhi lake in Tuticorin district, Rs.1.70 crore for digging a lake at Seelanaickenpatti in Madurai district and Rs. 92.65 lakh for converting the mud dam across the Maharajasamudram river in Pudukottai district into masonry structure. Modernisation of the Mettur dam's main canal system at a cost of Rs.11.35 crore, renovation of a dam across Karaipottanar at a cost of Rs.1.02 crore, digging a lake at Bommarajupettai in Tiruvallur district at a cost of Rs.33.01 lakh and construction of a dam across the surplus flow of Hisa Rajaneri lake at Kandigai village in Tiruvallur district at a cost of Rs.1.01 crore were among the new schemes.
Funds earmarked
Funds to the tune of Rs. 35.03 lakh had been earmarked for the construction of a dam across Vilangudi canal in Perambalur district, Rs. 23.78 lakh for building a check-dam across Vachchukkal brook and Rs. 30.56 lakh for the construction of a dam across the Bargur river at Kuttur village in Krishnagiri district, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.
