Three held for drug trafficking

NEW DELHI: Three persons, including the son of the absconding chairman of Municipal Corporation of Bhawani Mandi in Rajasthan, have been arrested by the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi police for their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking network that catered to clients based in Delhi, Goa, Bangalore, and in Sri Lanka as well.

Acting on a tip-off that some people from Rajasthan were supplying huge quantities of heroin in the Capital, a team led by Inspector Ramesh Kumar took up the probe and learnt that a drug peddler, Vinay Kumar, would come near Zakir Hussain College to deliver heroin to a client on February 5.

Subsequently, the police laid a trap and arrested Vinay, from whom one kg of the narcotic substance was recovered. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he bought heroin from the Chairman of Municipal Corporation of Bhawani Mandi, Ram Lal Gujjar, and his son, Rajesh.

Man attacked with razor

NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man was attacked by a person within Patiala House courts premises in New Delhi on Monday. The accused, who managed to escape, had a dispute with the victim's friend and was apparently angry that he was helping his adversary.

According to the police, Trilok, a bus conductor, had come to meet a lawyer at Patiala House courts along with his friend, Aqeel, during the day. Anis, who had some dispute with Aqeel, had also come there. In a fit of anger, he attacked Trilok with a razor. Trilok sustained minor injuries on his face.

A case of causing injury has been registered at Tilak Marg police station and efforts were on to trace Anis.

Appointment of UGC Chairman welcomed

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress MLA and AICC secretary Jaikishan has welcomed the appointment of S. K. Thorat as the new University Grants Commission Chairman. He has lauded the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre for appointing a well educated and hardworking officer belonging to the Dalit community as the head of the country's important education body.

Tehkhand project

likely to start soon

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Development Authority is fast moving ahead with preparations for the pilot project on public-private participation at Tehkhand in South Delhi. The DDA Vice-Chairman, Dinesh Rai, reviewed the project over the weekend.

During the review, conducted just when preparations for launch of the bidding process are being given the final touches, some architectural consultations for the project also took place.

Woman arrested

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old woman has been arrested by the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi police for alleged involvement in drug trafficking. The police claim to recovered 300 gm of heroin from her possession.

The accused, Kuldeep Kaur, was arrested at Raghubir Nagar in West Delhi over the weekend. During interrogation, she allegedly confessed to her involvement in eight criminal cases.

The police said Kuldeep had been engaged in the drug trade for the past three years and dealt with only those she knew personally. Her sister-in-law, Chandra, was arrested in December.
