Capturing nature at its best

Devesh K. Pandey

New Delhi: Illustrating the varied hues and colours of the lively Spiti Valley in the Himalayan range, numerous photographs by the late environmentalist, filmmaker and photographer, Ishwar Pandey, would be put on display at the Attic Gallery in the Regal Building at Connaught Place from Tuesday.

"Call of the Mountains" is a collection of photographs that bring forth painting-like quality of the beautifully shot frames. Mostly capturing the Spiti Valley, the pictures represent the love of the photographer for the Mother Nature as his each and every frame depicts breathtaking scenes of the natural beauty.

Among the photographs are the ones capturing the clouds nestling gently between the majestic mountain ranges, with a contrast of the barren wastes of the high-altitude desert.

Apart from taking photographs, Ishwar Pandey had also made several films on mountains, which were screened around the world. In films like "The Lonely Tree" originally shown in the United Kingdom's Channel 4, and "The Naked Hills" for Doordarshan, about two decades ago, he had voiced his concerns about the deforestation that destroyed a large portion of the forest cover of the mountains.

The inaugural function of the photo-exhibition would also feature a talk by the famous filmmaker and environmentalist, Mike Pandey, who would speak spoke about the importance and relevance of his late brother's work. He would also lead a discussion on the issue of environmental degradation and its effect on the fragile mountains. Ishwar Pandey's documentary "The Lonely Tree" would also be screened during the inauguration.
