BMP to take up tree census
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Do you want to know how many roadside trees are there in the city?
The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will take up a tree census to document the number of trees on the sidewalks in the BMP limits. The census will help the civic body chalk out programmes for the protection of trees and also evolve planting schemes.
Educational institutions, non-governmental organisations and individuals interested in participating in the census may contact the following officials for registration: Tree Officer and Deputy Conservator of Forests, BMP head office, N.R. Square, ph: 22485317; Chief Horticultural Officer, 17th floor, Mayo Hall, M.G. Road, ph: 22975545; Horticulture Superintendent (South Zone), BMP zonal office, 2nd Block, Jayanagar, ph: 22975748; and Horticulture Superintendent (West Zone), BMP zonal office, Malleswaram, ph: 22975626.
The BMP has warned people of legal action if they cut trees on sidewalks or on private land. According to a BMP press release, felling of trees on the sidewalks or on private land without the permission of the Tree Officer is an offence punishable under the Tree Preservation Act, 1976.
