Kidney `theft': police yet to trace hospital

Osmania Hospital doctors confirm removal of labourer's kidney

HYDERABAD: The inability of Venkatesh, the labourer from Chittoor district who alleged that his kidney had been stolen, to trace the hospital where he underwent an operation, is hampering the investigations into the case.

Based on the description given by the victim, detectives located a hospital, with a blood bank attached to it, near Gulzar Hauz in the Old City. "We thought the case was almost detected having zeroed in on the doctor heading the hospital. While the doctor is denying the charges, we too are not able to prove his complicity in the absence of material evidence," a police officer associated with the investigation said.

It is learnt the doctor not only denied the allegations levelled by Venkatesh but also maintained that he did not know who the latter was. According to the victim, that doctor had taken him to another hospital where the surgery was performed. "Until and unless the hospital is located, we cannot say who is responsible for the kidney theft," police said.

Meanwhile, police took 48-year-old Venkatesh to Osmania General Hospital where doctors confirmed after scanning tests that his left kidney had been removed. The sleuths continued the searches to locate the hospital. They took Venkatesh around several localities in the Old City as well as other parts of Hyderabad to recognise the hospital.
