National Youth Day celebrations

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The National Youth Day celebrations and a march to mark the occasion were inaugurated by R. Nataraj, Greater Chennai police Commissioner, at Vivekanada House on the Marina earlier this week. The march, comprising about 5,000 students, ended at Vivekananda College, Mylapore.

The functions were organised by Vivekanada Educational Society, Chennai, which runs 17 schools in the city.

The National Youth Day marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The day's functions focussed on imbibing Indian culture among the present day youth.

A pageant was also organised highlighting cultural symbols such as the epic Ramayana.

Mr. Nataraj said the youth should keep themselves physically and mentally strong to face the challenges.

Among those who participated were retired Director General of Police R. Rajagopalan.
