Union expresses concern

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The working committee of the All-India Agricultural Workers' Union has expressed concern over the manner in which the Centre was "ignoring the vast majority of rural population" by not implementing various measures proposed in the National Common Minimum Programme of the ruling United Progressive Alliance.

The committee, which met here recently under the chairmanship of union president P.Ramaiah, alleged that the Centre was ignoring the interests of the rural people on issues like employment and social and food security and favouring multinationals and a handful of Indian corporates.

Welcoming the passage of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the committee sought its proper implementation. The union decided to organise a month-long protest programme in February demanding adequate protection for food security and other social security measures.
