Science awards presented

CHENNAI: R. Krishnamurthy, Editor, Dinamalar, Sharad Haksar, digital photographer, and S.Krishnamurthy, station director, Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) were among the 10 persons, who were honoured by the Indian Science Monitor (ISM), a non-profit research organisation in Chennai, on Thursday.

R. Krishnamurthy was honoured for being instrumental in the revival of Sangam Tamil history.

"Finding a software, I think, is my most important achievement," he said.

S. Krishnamurthy, who was honoured for his contributions to the field of nuclear power utilisation said: "It is a myth that nuclear energy is harmful. It is, in fact, one of the safest forms of energy." Explaining the concept of `criticality' to students gathered at the award ceremony, he said, "Criticality, in nuclear parlance, means sustaining a chain reaction."

Dr. T.S. Chandrasekar, Founder & Chairman of Med India Digestive Diseases Hospital, urged the students not live on junk food.

Justice S. Jagadeesan, chairman, Ethiraj College Trust, conferred the awards on the recipients.

The other awardees included R. Thandavan, Head, Anna Centre of Public Affairs, Madras University; V. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Penta Media group; N. Ravichandran, CEO and Chief Scientist, Trimentus Technologies; B. Mariappan, Deputy Commissioner, Crime Branch, Chennai (received the award on behalf of Cyber Crimes Department), and Tamanna Kalam, a student of "The School," who was awarded for her projects on environmental issues.
