Turtle protection awareness walk on Sunday

CHENNAI : Members of the Kadal Aamai Padhukaavalargal (Sea Turtle Protection Force) will take out a march from Periya Neelangarai fishing village to Nainar fishing village at Uthandi, on Sunday.

Supraja Dharini of the Trust for Environment Education, Conservation and Community Development said the walk was aimed at educating the fishing community and the general public living near the beach on the need to protect turtle nests and enable hatching of the eggs.

The group would walk about eight km across three fishing villages on the stretch. The group was involved in the protection of sea turtles in the area for the past three years, she said.

It had brought out pamphlets in Tamil and English. While the Tamil pamphlets would be distributed among the fishing community, the pamphlets in English would be delivered to houses near the beach, she said.

C.K.Sreedharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, Tamil Nadu, K.P.M.Perrumahl, Chief Conservator of Forests and Director, Vandalur Zoo, Ashish Kumar Srivastava, Wildlife Warden, Chennai and Dharmendra Pratap Yadav, Director of Fisheries are among those who have agreed to participate in the programme.
