Doctors give tips on tackling avian flu

CHENNAI:
A team of doctors from the Madras Veterinary College on Friday conducted a demonstration for the wildlife wing on how to handle an avian influenza-afflicted bird and the precautionary measures to be adopted.
How the flu is carried by the migratory birds, identification, details of birds arriving in sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu, symptoms of those affected with avian influenza, methods to collect samples from a dead bird, personal care to be taken while handling such avifauna, collecting data and sending the samples to the veterinary college are some of the topics that were covered in the four-hour demonstration, said Ashish Kumar Srivastava, wildlife warden, Chennai. K.P.M. Perrumahl, Chief Conservator of Forests and Director, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, inaugurated the programme, held at the Guindy National Park. Range officers, foresters, guards and watchers, besides bird handlers from the Vandalur Park and Children's Park, Guindy, participated.
