CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday said the Government would bring 5,011 regular employees of various temples in the State under the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme besides introducing a special scheme for the benefit of 4,882 employees of smaller temples. In a statement here, she said the decision followed representations from superintendents, writers, typists, watchmen, office assistants and those employed in kitchens at temples with adequate revenue to extend pension to them. Under the scheme, employees with minimum 20 years service would be provided Rs.750 as monthly pension. Extension of family pension to the next of kin of pensioners or employees after their death, insurance benefit to the tune of Rs. 60,000 for kin of employees who died in harness and pension for those employees who opted for voluntary retirement after completing 10 years of service were other benefits. Employees who commuted part of their pension would be able to get "100 times of that sum as consolidated amount at the time of retirement." Though pension would not be provided to the employees who retired from service within 10 years after enrolling themselves under the EPF Scheme, they would be able to avail themselves of other benefits. Employees of smaller temples, which lacked financial resources, would not be able to contribute to the EPF. As the EPF Scheme could not be extended to these two categories of temple employees, the Government had decided to create a corpus from the surplus funds of temples. A monthly pension of Rs. 750 would be provided from the interest of the corpus fund, she said.
