West Bengal is not Bihar, says Jyoti Basu
Special Correspondent
Jyoti Basu
KOLKATA:
Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal is not unduly concerned over any step the Election Commission might be contemplating for the State in the run up to the coming Assembly elections, senior Polit Bureau member Jyoti Basu said on Friday.
"West Bengal is not Bihar," Mr. Basu said when asked to comment on the decision of the Commission to depute 19 observers including K. J. Rao (who had overseen elections in Bihar) to oversee the on-going revision of electoral rolls in the State. "I do not know K. J. Rao... , But West Bengal is not Bihar and people here will vote for us," he added.
"Till now none has criticised us and every election has been held in a free and fair manner," he said adding that even the former Chief Election Commissioner, T. N. Seshan, had said after voting (during a previous Assembly election) "that polling was peaceful."
